Solid Waste Action Plan
The City of Afton does not currently have a solid waste disposal site due to the fragile nature of the soils and the underlying geological substrate. Because of this, the City contracts with trash haulers outside the City to collect solid waste.
Even though the City itself does not have solid waste collectors or a disposal site, it works hard and prides itself on the clean surrounding environment. The City prohibits the burning or dumping of trash and garbage and also has a very active recycling program that works hard to encourage citizens to recycle on a regular basis. The City also has a contract with a recycling hauler to assist with these efforts.
The City of Afton establishes the following solid waste goals:
- Seek 100% citizen participation in household and commercial recycling. Signifiacntly reduce the amount of material that Afton residnets and businesses contribute to landfills or are burnt in waste incinerators.
- Expand recycling efforts to include used electronics, batteries and other hazardous materials.
- Reuse of all useable building materials.
- Recycling or reuse of large household items such as furniture, carpeting, outdoor furniture, etc.
- Seek 100% particpation in on-site composting of yard waste and brush.
- Utilize the most efficient means of managing recycled materials to limit the number of miles driven to collect and deliver recycled materials.
To bring about these goals, the City of Afton hereby adopts the following policies:
To enact these policies and perpetuate the goals of the city, the City of Afton seeks to implement the following strategies:
